Gaming comes in many forms. It can come in FPS, RTS, MMO, RPG, MMORPG and others but we are focusing on the RPG aspect of gaming and what made it, what it is today - with the Top 5 RPG games of all time. We have come up with a list of what has made the RPG class unique and different from all other games with some of the classics and well known appearing on the list. For starters, our number five pick is GTA, San Andreas.

5) GTA San Andreas

With many many games out there hitting the roof with massive sales, graphics, and great storylines, this game is sure not an exception. GTA: San Andreas, although some may beg to differ, we chose this as one of our top because of the ground breaking storyline with a look into the gang world back in the 90’s. You are plunged into the typical surroundings in a poor neighborhood where shootings, robberies, and drugs are commonplace. You play as a reformed gangster who has just come back to San Andreas to visit his mothers funeral but does he relapse back into a life of crime, drugs, and violence? This kind of storyline always makes for a great game, which is what San Andreas is.

4) The sims

Now the Sims are a different story. The sims brought good gameplay along with decent graphics for the time. This game helped shape the modern industry of RPGs to the point where you are literally carrying a second life that you can nurse into existence. Although there are some tough spots, it has real-life circumstances and conditions and requires you to get a job, pay bills, interact with people, and carry on a normal life if you are to succeed.

3) Diablo I

The Diablo series is the game that pretty much shaped all of RPGs to come. That is why it is number 3 of our top 5. Diablo didn’t have the best graphics, but it did have the storyline and abilities that made it one of the best. Diablo not only got you addicted to casting spells and moving from town to town fighting zombies and monsters, but it gave you a whole new side of RPG gameplay. Instead of just doing missions, you are using magic, swords, the elements, and you have to use tactics as well.

2) Grand Theft Auto IV

The recent unveil of Grand Theft Auto IV by Rockstar is the newest top of the line RPG. The game recruits physics, real life situations such as being thrown through a window, or being drug under a car. It also brings in lifelike buildings, surroundings, sounds, and people. They had hundreds of people employ their voices for street-side chat and with all this content comes a great, developed game. These are just some of the reasons that make Grand Theft Auto great and why it is one of our top.

1) Oblivion

For our number 1 pick, we had a lot of discussion and finally made our minds up that The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion should be our top pick. Sword fighting, magic blazing combat is only a portion of the excellence of Oblivion. Along with the real faces and thousands of unique items, this game allows you to make your own decisions all along the way and pick your own path. They also have diverse cultures, speech, and buildings along with their multiple cities. But the icing on the cake is that they allow you to change your surroundings through their detailed construction program. You can add spells, weapons, buildings, missions, characters, objects, books, islands, new worlds, and I could go on and on with the possibilities but that is what make Oblivion one of the best. The possibilities are endless and it can keep you playing for years, and I would know.

Hey bud, let’s check this out..RPG means Roll Playing Games ...right?

Now in GTA4 or SA, you play the roll of a guy going to his gmom’s funeral and so on, that’s a roll. The game is centred around his character, isn’t it? Yes it’s 3rd person shooting but the game was made to focus around the story line as well.

The Sims....you play the rolls of many people. You create characters and run the game controlling their lives as a normal person in society. Now Simulation would be a righteous category as well but what about games like Flight Sim and F1 2006, etc...those are sims but not RPGs because you can’t play the role of a car or plane obviously. Sims is not like that because there are actual people who you can play the roll of...

Give a guy some slack for the images, that could be corrected soon enough.

actually i think gta is mostly storyline. You can go out and do other stuff but to really move onto other places and islands you have to unlock those through the storyline (RPG) so I think it is mainly an RPG. Although the sims, it is a simulator...but i guess if you look at it in a way it is an rpg...but like how bradley put it

”Flight Sim and F1 2006, etc...those are sims but not RPGs because you can’t play the role of a car or plane obviously.”

sums it up

yeah Bradley kinda gets it right.

And yet I would have hoped for better titles in the RPG category.

Plus if you include 3rd person action/adventure games in there, it does muddle up the whole genre.

Anyhow If that list includes Taylor’s personal favorites, I got nothing against it. But still better RPGs out there.

i have to agree with bradley wint on this one.whenever someone talks about gta the first thing i think of it as is an rpg and not a ”Third-Person-Action Game with some story”.even though the genre isnt technically that, i still dont see any fault in this post.he made some good choices and i agree with most of them, but hes missing final fantasy :)

3 of them games aren’t RPG’s, you can argue all you want. If you define a game as an RPG because you play a character and are immersed in a storyline of doing different tasks, then most games are surely RPG’s, no?!

That aside in your bit about Diablo

”moving from town to town fighting zombies and monsters”

there was only one town in Diablo, you must be thinking of Diablo 2 which is a must better game.

Also Oblivion sucks.

This post infuriates me.

I don’t want to burst into tears right now, so I’ll just point out a little detail. The only two games that could be classified as RPGs are Oblivion and Diablo... those are the best examples that you could come up with?

For the love of god, get rid of these casual failures.

Yeah, it was my mistake. I know the genres of the game and decided to write it anyway because frankly, every game to me is ’action’. So I just classified it as an RPG because that is pretty much what every I know thinks of it as. As for the towns, I had originally had that title as Diablo I-II, but changed it and forgot to change some content. As for the Sims, yes it is a simulator, but I took it more as an RPG because when I play the game I don’t quit after a couple hours I actually go through generations with my characters and all people who play the game like me would think the same. Oh well, I learn not to bend the rules then. Thanks for the comments, now I know someone is reading the blog... :)

Okay... If this is a list of the ”best” All-time RPGs... Where Is the Final Fantasy Series at all... Where is Chrono Trigger? And GTA??? Really? Did you grow up on Peggle and Diner Dash? That is a Third-Person WoM (Waste of Money) at best. Really stick to your guns... if you think that GTA is an RPG then you really just need to go back to playing your fancy little flash games on the internet. KThXbaI!
